Floating – adrift yet not necessarily lost

Welcome to your day of life, kindred spirit.

I appreciate sharing a few moments enjoying reconnecting with nature, ourselves and each other over this Conversation Cuppa.

Sometimes the greatest uncertainty is not knowing where we're going.

Sometimes it is no longer knowing what we're supposed to hold onto.

It seems we naturally create anchors in our lives.

A role.

A relationship.

A routine.

A plan.

Even a familiar way of thinking about ourselves.

They help us recognise where we are and where we might be going.

Then conditions change.

Something ends.

Something no longer fits.

Our Brilliant Body responds differently.

The landmarks we once relied upon may no longer point in quite the same direction.

And without even realising it...

...we can begin reaching for something familiar to hold onto.

Another plan.

Another answer.

Perhaps even an earlier version of ourselves.

At the Energy Café, I call this part of the Drama of Life.

Not because wanting solid ground is wrong.

But because we can quietly begin believing that without an anchor, we must be lost.

Yet nature continually flourishes through changing relationships and changing conditions.

Perhaps uncertainty isn't always asking us to find our way back.

Perhaps there are moments when life is gently inviting us to become curious about where we actually are.

What if not knowing where we're going...

...doesn't mean there's nowhere to go?

What if adrift isn't necessarily lost?

For hundreds of millions of years, plants have been finding ways to

flourish on land.

Roots helped anchor them.

Leaves reached towards light.

Flowers found ways to move pollen between one plant and another.

And then...

...some plants went back into the water.

Not once.

Again and again.

Returning to water changed the conditions in which they lived.

And when the conditions changed...

...so did the relationships.

Some plants reduced their roots.

Some seagrasses began allowing water itself to carry their pollen.

And among the smallest flowering plants on Earth, something

particularly curious happened.

Wolffia lost its roots altogether.

Tiny green plants, sometimes barely a millimetre long...

...simply floating on the surface of the water.

Rootless.

Unanchored.

Yet flowering.

We've saved you a window seat at the Energy Café...

...looking out into nature through one of its gentle points of view.

We don't always think quite so generously about being unanchored

ourselves.

A plan changes.

A relationship changes.

Work changes.

Our Brilliant Body changes.

Something that once gave our life direction is suddenly no longer there.

And we can feel...

adrift.

Perhaps our first instinct is to reach for something solid.

Another plan.

Another role.

Another answer.

Something that might help life feel familiar again.

Nothing unusual about that.

Solid ground can feel reassuring.

But perhaps this tiny floating plant offers another possibility.

What if adrift isn't necessarily lost?

Wolffia isn't waiting to find somewhere to put down roots.

The conditions around it have changed what flourishing requires.

Water surrounds it.

Nutrients are available differently.

Floating isn't a failure to become anchored.

Floating is part of how it lives.

Perhaps our own changing conditions sometimes invite a similar

curiosity.

Not:

How do I get back to where I was?

But:

What works here?

What supports me here?

What might I no longer need to carry?

What becomes possible when the old structure isn't deciding everything

that happens next?

Our Brilliant Body is already participating in that conversation.

Breathing.

Responding.

Adapting.

Continually relating to the conditions in which it finds itself.

Perhaps feeling better now isn't always about returning to a previous

version of ourselves.

Sometimes...

...it might begin by noticing where we actually are.

As we continue walking with the wisdom of our Brilliant Body, one

Vital Step at a time, perhaps we don't need to hurry towards the

nearest shore.

There may be something here worth noticing first.

Something remaining.

Something changing.

Something beginning.

Perhaps even something quietly waiting for enough space to grow.

Maybe freedom isn't having nothing left to lose.

Perhaps it's discovering that we no longer need everything we thought

we had to hold onto.

And maybe that is where creativity begins.

Not with an empty landscape...

...but with a different relationship to what is already here.

What works here?

And that, dear kindred spirit, is enough.

You are already enough.

Happy worthday!

It's worth pausing for a moment to...

...celebrate our day of life by noticing where we are, rather than where we thought we would be.

...acknowledge one way our Brilliant Body is already responding to today's conditions.

...appreciate that being uncertain about what comes next doesn't mean there is nowhere to go.

The Conversation Cuppa is always ready at the Energy Café.

Until next time...

…enjoy reconnecting to yourself, nature and each other.
